Make people look great in front of their boss.
It sounds ridiculous, but it’s important in our line of work.
When I was chatting with Brian Oblinger about this, he re-framed it a little more elegantly;
“Make other people heroes. If I can make one of my team members look like a hero internally. If I can make a stakeholder at a company work with a hero, that will help me in the long term.”
Brian is also talking from experience. He’s worked with eBay, PlayStation, and Airbnb to help deliver community strategy.
As a team, we design and build platforms that enable communities to thrive.
We create features that help others become the hero.
It could be a feature highlighting a high-engaging member, allowing them to showcase their ‘top 1%’ member of a community.
Often, it’s reporting, the CSV exports, and the beautiful graphs that showcase the metrics that matter to that organisation.
When I say, “We want to help folks look great in front of their bosses” - what we’re saying is;
We design and build to move the metrics that matter to you and your organisation.
Over some time, this should make you feel like a superhero in meetings and planning sessions.
So, when you’re working to change a feature or push forward an agenda, think: Will this affect the metrics that matter? Will this be something I can celebrate with my senior team?
